How Does Neutralization Work on Dark Lips?

Dark, purplish lip tones cannot be tinted without balancing them with colour theory. Here is the logic and process of neutralization.

Applying pink or nude directly to dark lips usually ends in disappointment: the colour either doesn't show or turns grey-brown. This is because the existing dark tone mixes with the applied pigment.

Colour Theory at Work

Neutralization works on the complementary-colour logic of the colour wheel: purplish tones are balanced with warm orange-based pigments, blue-grey tones with warm yellow-orange correctors. The aim is a neutral base ready for the target colour.

How Does the Process Go?

  • Analysis: the lip's undertone and degree of darkness are assessed
  • Neutralization: correctors are applied over 1–3 sessions
  • Tinting: once healed, the target colour is applied

A Process That Takes Patience

Neutralization is not a one-session miracle but gradual colour management. Planned correctly, lips end up with an even, vivid, natural colour. The artist's pigmentology training is the most critical assurance of this procedure.
