Does Gel Polish Damage Nails?
The most common gel-polish question: does it damage nails? The answer lies in how it is applied and removed.
Gel polish has replaced classic polish with its weeks-long chip-free shine. But is it true that it damages nails?
It's Not the Polish, It's the Wrong Process
Gel polish applied and removed correctly leaves no damage on a healthy nail. Trouble usually starts at three points: over-filing the nail surface, scraping or peeling the polish off at home, and back-to-back applications with no rest.
A Healthy Gel Routine
- Have it applied in a hygienic, professional salon
- Always leave removal to a professional; acetone wraps and gentle clearing are a must
- Apply cuticle oil regularly
- If you see warning signs (thinning, white patches), take a 1–2 week break
When to Pause?
If your nails are brittle, peeling or developing white areas, listen to them: a short rest and strengthening care restores the nail plate. On healthy nails, gel polish can be safely maintained with the right routine.
